Coffee maker filters are made in different shapes and from many different materials. I will discuss them each briefly to give you an indication of what to look for.
The two main shapes of coffee filters are flat bottomed or cone shaped. you obviously need to use the one that fits your coffee maker. The more commonly used on is the flat bottom filter but the cone shaped filter is far better for extracting the coffee. In the flat bottom filter the extraction is uneven and there is a better chance that the filter will clog.
Selecting the right coffee maker filter obviously makes a difference to your brew.
Keep in mind you should grind coffee beans fine for paper, and slightly coarser for metal and cloth filters.
Titanium coffee filter.
These coffee filters are made of perforated titanium sheets. The titanium is not going to affect the flavor of your coffee . Like with all metallic filters, the coffee oils can go through easily and also some fine grounds.
Gold coffee filter.
SwissGold or Gold coffee filters are plated with 23 karat gold. These are the best metallic filters vailable. They have very fine perforations so they will keep out more grounds than gold-tone or titanium filters while still letteing the oils throu.
Stainless steel coffee filter.
Also called gold-tone coffee filters. The steel is treated so that it does not give a metallic taste. All the coffee oils are passed through so the coffee will taste more full-bodied. Depending on the grind there may however be a fair amount of grounds getting through the filter.
Plastic coffee filter.
These coffee maker filters are made of plastic mesh. If made from a cheap plastic they may impart a taste and also might not be as durable.
Cloth coffee filter.
One drawback is that these are not so convenient. It needs to rinsed with water and sometimes must be cleaned with a soft brush. Then it needs to dry somewhere. Cloth filters are made from either hemp or unbleached cotton. They however let the coffee oils through and only very little coffee grounds (less than metallic filters). Cloth filters are very good if you want clear coffee with full body. One cloth filter can last several months.
Paper coffee filter.
The paper filters produce a clear, sediment free coffee. They however don't let through some of the coffee oils which makes the coffee somewhat weak. The Chemex uses a special type of paper filter that lets a lot of the coffee oils through.
So which one is right for you?
I hope that the above summary and discussion gives you enough infomation to choose the right filter for your needs.
